move: only the beginning

well i made it out to the "show-me" state alive but it certainly wasn't an easy trek. i'm sure those of you who've done the full cross country drive are shaking your heads... read on. read on.

it didn't start out easy and then halfway through illinois' cornfields want to shoot myself.... oh no no no no. this sucked from the very beginning. even before the michalski train left the station. even before it got to the station for loading!

it all started on the last saturday in july when the entire fam showed up at wiggins street 'round noonish to start the loading process. ok, so it really started when the big guy (aka-dad) went to u-haul to retrieve the 14' truck and the car transport tow thingy that he had reserved about a month before and had called to confirm just that morning. he gets to the u-haul center and.... no truck. they had lent it out just for the morning but it was due back half an hour ago. woops. even with the ever accruing fines the woman who had borrowed it still hadn't returned it. but wait! magically a 14' truck appeared in their lot. fishy? why yes. so the give the truck to the big guy and he drives it on down to pton.

scene change to wiggins. enter madre, padre, hermano, and truck.

time to start loading! now there's a new character playing a major role in the saga... being that it's one of the last days in july, it's about 99+ degrees and my one measly little air conditioner is doing didly with people continually opening doors and not closing them. great.

now i have a lot of shit. of this, i am well aware. but that's why for weeks before the moving endeavor lil p and the big guy would come over and take things back to metuch with them as well as help me start packing the non everyday stuff. huge help. so the whole sunroom was full of boxes ready to go in the truck. fab. well that was the last part of the fabulousness. after that they wanted to pack my bed (nevermind that i still had another night to go in the apartment!) then all the things that i hadn't taken apart or packed up yet. and we all know how much i love to be rushed.

so by the end of the day, we've all yelled at each other, we've been dehydrated to a new level, we're all exhausted, i have no bed, and it looks like there's a-whole-nother day's work ahead of us. at about 8ish, they leave, i lock up the truck, and continue packing all night long.

the sun rises, i'm still packing, and the 'rents are on their way back down around 10ish. so now the truck is 100% chock fulla shit and so is pepito strapped into his little vehicle transport. dad and i climb into the cab of el trucko, i take off my shoes, and we high-five as we start the journey. yes, we really are that cheesy.

so we pull away from wiggins and turn down moore street only to hear mom in her car behind us honking. i thought it was just a little my-baby-girl-is-going-to-grad-school honk, even though she was flying out to meet us there... but she kept honking and then cut us off just as we made the right onto on nassau street. the big guy and i are smiling and waving as she rolls down her window to frantically holler something at us.

side note: i only own a small portable cooler so there was a limit of perishables i could salvage from el fridge-o. knowing that i hate waste i had been consuming most of the fridge contents for the week prior but there was still half of the half gallon of milk in there... so i chugged it before hopping into the truck cab. calcium, protein, i figured it was good for me.

so we roll our window down to hear what lil p has to say and she screams, "you forgot to close the truck and all your shit is falling out all over moore street!!!"

omg. adrenaline kicks in and i jump out of the cab and take off at a full speed sprint down nassau to moore to retrieve "all my shit" that has fallen out "all over moore street." i'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that it's now 2:20pm (heat of the day), i am only wearing socks on my feet, and have just chugged a quart of milk.

i find my orange plastic umbra garbage can and a single serve coffee maker i was considering freecycling in a neat little clump at the corner of nassau and moore and run all the way up moore street to find lil p holding my swiffer. "was that it?!" "oh, yeah... well i guess." overreacting and exaggerating seriously run in the family.

ok, all is in the truck once again, this time the door is closed and locked. "st. louis or bust" take ii. (yes there was another high-five here too).

more to come when i feel like it. this was only the beginning!
